Stalemate in opener, McCarthy on the spot 2010-04-19 11:50:45

Fahy Rovers 2-2 Snugboro United
Moneen, 12pm, Sun 18/4/10
McCarthy (2 pens)

The opening game of Mick Wallaces tenure ended in stalemate in a game
of few chances. A draw the fair result in a game lacking in creativity but
plentiful in endeavour and combativity.

The opening goal came from a questionable penalty decision with the
defender appearing to get the ball at the feet of Sean Curry. No card was
given by the ref despite the tackle coming from the last man. A case can
be argued that its either a penalty and red card or no foul given at all.
John McCarthy stepped up to cooly roll the ball to the keepers left.
1-0 Snugboro.

At half time, Wallace told his charges to keep their heads and the game
was there for the taking. Inexperience was to lead to the equaliser
however, with youngster Kenneth Guthrie needlessly getting involved off
the ball and giving away a free kick on the edge of the box. The resulting
free kick was curled towards the back post with Colin Corrigan getting the
faintest of touches helping the ball into his own net.

Another questionable penalty decision shortly after sent Snugboro back
into the lead. The Fahy goalkeeper and Sean Curry both jumped to contest
a ball and with both missing it and colliding, the referee pointed to the
spot once again, brandishing a yellow to the goalkeeper. It was McCarthy
once again to display his calmness in front of goal, stroking the ball down
the middle with the keeper making his mind up too early.

Parity was restored shortly after, a counter attack from Fahy went down
the left, was centred, half cleared and fell to the Fahy number 8 who
finished expertly from 18 yards.

Padraig Conway had a great chance to win it for Snugboro but placed his
effort from 10 yards straight at the goalkeeper. Both teams seemed
content with a draw in the closing stages, neither committing too men
forward.
